Users of this forum should be sure to check the "Last 20 Posts" feature regularly. (Nick, can this be upped if traffic increases?) Yes, that's what I always look at first.

Hey have you guys ever thought about making this a mailing list? I think those work better.... (ducks and covers) Oooh, how provocative, you'd better be ducking and covering Mr L.

Whatever you do, don't sign up for the (pointless) Digest version, Ponitless to you mebbe, but it's my preferred option - I find it far better than dozens of individual LD mails every day. I scan the list of subjects at the top of the digest & decide which (if any) warrant actual reading. > last 20 Post feature regularly. (Nick, can this be upped if traffic increases?) more than likely, if that ever comes to pass

Whatever you do, don't sign up for the (pointless) Digest version, Pointless to you mebbe, :-) just in case anyone's considering it (and I did start out on the digest myself) If you use the digest version then 1) if anyone on the regular posts in HTML it can make a whole digest illegible for you 2) The threading of messages is lost when you reply 3) Can't always easily tell who posted a message. 4) You have to skim through a great big post to find the message you want to read, and you can't flag a message to reply later. 5) You need to edit the subject line when you reply (and edit out all the other posts) On the regular list you can either use gmail, which gives all the advantages of a forum (apparently...but don't blame me) OR 1) you can set up a simple email filter and dump every post into a folder. 2) you can easily see the posts you like to see, and delete as you like. 3) you can filter by subject (which a lot of people do). Hopefully, this forum builds up some traffic, and then we can see if it works as well as the LD list...or better. I'm fully aware that it's just as possible to use a forum like a mailing list as it is to do the opposite. With the LD list, there's always the chance that the guy who runs the site will simply pull the plug on it, he hasn't participated for years. In that case, it may get a bit crowded here.

Jeez, what a prospect. The only thing that worries me about thisboard is that it's (apparently) stored in a bespoke format and you can't downlod the contents to transfer to another forum. When I set it up, I didn't know how to run my own forum, I now do. So, if we *did* want to migrate to other software or server, we'd lose what we've already got.

so maybe it would be better to do it before it gets any bigger Hmmm. Proboards is likley to be around for a good long time and the only serious downside is the advertising. Your esp board is pretty busy, but proboards seems to handle it? What do y'all think? Are there real benefits to be gained from hosting privately?

The only benefit I can think of is if you want to be able to back up stuff or archive it for posterity
