(no replies yet - maybe everyone has gone back to using hardware loopers ;D)

I run Pro Tools LE so I use the mBox 2 for my interface with Ableton Live for looping.

I have one similar to the UCA202 (it came 'free' with my Behringer mixer), and it does work, latency did not seem to be an issue on the few occasions I've used it (I think I was using ISO4ALL with it). Obviously, only phono in/outs, no gain control (I think the vol ctrl on the 202 is for the h/phones out), no midi, etc. This means that you'd need further equipment (eg small mixer at least, plus midi connections) to be able to interface properly, which is sort of defeating the point.

But if all you want to do is input the guitar into a laptop, would that not be enough?

But if all you want to do is input the guitar into a laptop, would that not be enough? Possibly, although the phono ins are line level. I'll gladly lend you mine to try if you like, as I rarely use it (what's the betting I'll instantly desperately need it as soon as I send it ) Stephen

I'm using a MOTU 828mkII which has plenty of inputs for hardware devices and very useful mixer control software. I can set up aux sends to external devices and software looping.

Nick, going back to the cheap Behringer interface (UCA202), I.ve been using mine (UCA200) pretty successfully recently (to record onto my little Asus netbook), but you will need a mixer or something to go into the line level phono inputs, as there is no way (that I can find) of controlling the gain into the PC otherwise. The Behringer drivers don't seem to include even a level in!

The Behringer drivers don't seem to include even a level in! That's fair enough. I'd prefer that to having a budget VCA in the hardware (quality?), or the unforgivable practice of doing the vol control in the digital domain.

I was using an M-Audio Firewire 410 until it suffered a fatal power surge.
I've replaced it temporarily with an M-Audio Audiophile I had lying around at home, which works okay aside from the fact I need to put a pre-amp in front of it, and it only outputs through RCA jacks.
The Firewire 410 was a great unit though.

I use a MOTU Traveller. It's Firewire bus powered, has very low latency suitable for live looping & good audio quality. I use it with percussion rather than guitar, but I'm sure it would be equally good for guitar. 8 analogue ins & outs + it has hardware input gain controls on the front for inputs 1 - 4 which is useful.
