I played my first church gig a couple of weeks ago, it was quite fun However, it wasn't that much different to playing at the school in Burton, which I did the week before

Churches are great places to play, probably my preferred sort of venue, I just wonder how (ahem) forgiving the acoustics can be for what I suppose might be termed less ambient/meditative (oh go on then), more rock-oriented things. But if that sort of venue was available, I'd drive pretty much anywhere in mainland UK to get on stage/flagstone/pulpit. When I play Churches I like to float some "ambient" round the acoustics( unless someone else on the bill already did that ), but I don't have problems making the guitar generated rhythmic stuff sound good. What helps is to not use artificial reverb. The problem instruments in a church situation are the kick drum, and the bass, where a compromised sound is required. In a Cathedral (large church) I guess it gets harder, Norwich Cathedral organ doesn't render the fast Bach pieces all that well.

Good to see you are thinking about a UK loopfest. An art-gallery or church are great, or a small theatre are ok.

Jez, I think we're all keen on the idea of the Burton-on-Trent gig. Seems absolutely ideal. Have to admit tho', I wouldn't be able to bring a crowd either, and I couldn't suggest any loopers who would. I'm also thinking also about doing something in Norwich later in the year, with more than one event. In that case I'd be thinking about an "ambient specific" event...generally I can program a bit of "ambience" into the procedings, but problem is that the genre is very well represented by willing performers. It would be interesting to actually publicise an event as ambient and see how that draws people in.

I will talk to my contact at the school and see if they would be interested in the idea and if so what dates might be available, then we can take it from there
and if you do something 'ambient' in Norwich I'd love to play if you have room

There's also a possible venue in sheffield www.abbeydalepicturehouse.co.uk/barabbey.phpthe right size, bar if needed, on a main bus route. Will find out the cost. As an addition to Burton, not an alternative - if we can do one gig, we can do 2! So who's up for playing these gigs? I'd suggest no more than 4 performers plus a jam....

I made some investigations at the venue, and I reckon it's possible to do the Norwich Church gig. I sold it as an afternoon of music, halfway between a sound installation and a live gig. (they've had a sound installation before). I have to make some further contacts, but things seem positive so far. Positives: it's central Norwich, there shouldn't be any difficulty in getting passers by to augment any audience that responds to the publicity. Nice acoustics, church enough to float the ambience, but small enough to not lose detail. Negatives: no venue parking, and access by Norwich one way puzzle ( maps provided as needed), parking in Norwich will cost at least a fiver :-( PosNeg?: venue is free, there'll be a collection bowl for the venue, free admission. This is an experiment, to create an unashamedly ambient event here, I'm hoping it will be well received but who knows.
So far artists to play (subject to dates and availability) Jez Stephen Scott possibly andy butler, but it's not at all essential that I play.
Who else? David ? Nick?( yep, I know it's a long way)

If Nick wanted to play we could possibly share transport True! depends on the day of the week - friday/sat would be ideal, since we could hopfully break up the journey overnight?
