Why don't we get a small team together to organise a decent show somewhere? We have the talent, but can we organise it?

i'm up for it - but finding loop friendly venues is "challenging" - an art gallery maybe?

Rough geographical location? Number of acts? What kind of act?(the Euro guys went for ambient/experimental) Need an audience?(hardest bit)

>Rough geographical location? Anywhere suitable, cheap and not a million miles from motorways >Number of acts? I'd say no more than 5 * 30 mins. I'm not a big fan of these mammoth festivals where you have no time to rest >What kind of act?(the Euro guys went for ambient/experimental) I'd just pick interesting acts, if I were the boss >Need an audience?(hardest bit) Ideally yes! I think it needs to be done under some "arty" initiative, using a modest grant of some kind. Held in a private venue it won't attract as much publicity, but in a public arts space... Let's keep talking. Any other Brits care to chime in?

Do we have anyone here who has experience with applying for funding? I have just enough of that to know. 1) If you're inexperienced, it's very unlikely you'll succeed. 2) I'm not very good at it, and don't have the connections.

2) I'm not very good at it, and don't have the connections. We'd make a good team then... Will google "obtaining funding for obscure music in sheffield"

I might be able to get the place where I put the Awakenings gigs on in Burton-on-Trent
It's a cool venue with built in PA and nice projection system, but it is a little off the beaten trak and is a school hall, which might put some people off

but it is a little off the beaten trak and is a school hall, which might put some people off I suspect looping fans are used to visiting obscure parts of the country! Loop gigs are the definition of "not for profit" What costs would be involved? Marillion do a great number by selling CDs of the gig to punters on the way out. Whilst we probably couldn't manage this on the night, we could probably make a bit of money selling CDs to be posted out once remastered & "tidied up" ? As long as we didn't all then go and post them for free on our sites!

More info? (enjoying an audio stream from your site as I type)

to answer Nick first, I'm friends with a teacher at the school, so costs are minimal, just a small cut of whatever we take on admissions more info for Andy, here's the website for Awakenings: www.awakenings-em.co.ukIf you have any other questions, just ask I'm pretty sure a few of the people who come to these would be interested in coming to a loopfest If there is interest in doing something at the school I'd have to talk to my friend and see what dates are available

and along the lines of Nick's idea for selling recordings, I do a virtual ticket for Awakenings, where you get an mp3 download of the gig a few days after, people who attend get this included in the price of attending, people who can't attend, for whatever reasons, can pay for a ticket and get the download
I do artwork too, so people can print out covers and burn CDRs if they are so inclined, this saves on all the work that would be required for a proper CDR release and still allows acts participating to release stuff after if they want

Hello - been trying to chip in since last week but forgot password etc and only just managed to log-in with new id. Anyway - I'd be interested in getting involved with this, please, although I have no fan-base, no organisational skills to speak of and can't even dance a little. Any chance I can go on the foot of the bill?!
Selling CDs of the event seems like a strong possibility.
Venue - this seems like it may have been found? Depending on the bill, art galleries/centres possibly in converted churches can have interesting acoustic properties, but the reverberant qualities might not work so well with more propulsive music?
Anyway, Burton-on-Trent looks pretty close to motorways etc, so if it's possible all well and good.
Cheers
David

I've played a couple of churches and not had a problem. Ditto, I can even turn down the reverb mix Great idea about virtual tickets Jez. DCO "no fan base"?? You have at least 1 in Sheffield and my cat joins in whenever I play you....

DCO "no fan base"?? You have at least 1 in Sheffield and my cat joins in whenever I play you.... Nick - you're very kind, as always. I mean that I'm not able to bring a crowd of people with me, (or indeed anyone), which I'm guessing might be a criteria of some sort. Churches are great places to play, probably my preferred sort of venue, I just wonder how (ahem) forgiving the acoustics can be for what I suppose might be termed less ambient/meditative (oh go on then), more rock-oriented things. But if that sort of venue was available, I'd drive pretty much anywhere in mainland UK to get on stage/flagstone/pulpit. Actually, I'm not sure now what my point was. Old age. Bother, mutter, fades away...
