I made up a special lead with resistors. "20dB pad" if you wanna Google the technical.
Luckily, a lot of mixers have a volume control on the "tape out".

I've started using mine on the control room outs of my mixer which has a separate gain control, which the tape outs don't, but the 20dB pad sounds like an idea for when I use it with other gear with less control
