that Korg Sound on Sound looks SWEET!!! Nice, ..but I reckon the Zoom Q3 has the coolest feature list of all (remembering of course, that not all features are created equal when it comes to actually getting your hands on them) www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/q3/

H3? that link is for the Q3 video recorder Um, yep, your right of course, and that's the device I'm pointing out. Cancel that though, the Q3 microphone config is something called "120degree stereo". What a shame, that'll just give a "hole in the middle". May be worth noting that the new Zoom H4n has some sort of multitracking capability. ...but who knows if it's in any way actually usable.

It does seem to have a lot of attractive features. Wonder how much it'll cost?

I just bought a Korg Sound on Sound, my Zoom H2's line input has died and I needed a replacement recorder so I figured I'd give this one a go, will report back on its recording/looping abilities once I've had a play with it.

unfortunately it doesn't look like the SOS can actually do proper seamless loop recording
as far as I can tell it allows you to loop an area and will record from the start to the end of that area, but at the end recording stops and has to be re-armed to start again when the loop gets back to the start, this effectively mean you can only record every other loop and that sounds overlapping the start and end are rudely cut off
This is the precise wording from the manual:
Repeat recording (A/B loop recording)
During loop playback, you can record by pressing the Record button. 1. Refer to the “Repeat playback (A/B loop playback)” section to start loop playback. 2. Press the Record button to enter Record Ready mode. The Record LED indicator will flash slowly. 3. Press the Record button again to enter Record mode. At this point, nothing is recorded yet. Recording will start after the playback position returns to Point A from Point B. The Record LED indicator will continue flashing slowly until the playback position reaches Point B, then it will light up steadily when the playback position returns to Point A. 4. When the recording position reaches Point B, the unit enters Record Ready mode and starts A/B loop playback. The Record LED indicator will flash. If you want to repeat overdubbing, press the Record button again to repeat loop recording.

the trouble is you can't press record again until the end of the loop, by which time you are into another loop and not recording, so you can really only record alternate loops

used it to record a gig on Wednesday and it was much easier to get good levels without clipping than on the H2, so that's good and transferring files to the laptop after was as easy as putting the card into the adaptor, inserting it into the laptop and copying the wav file
as I'd only recorded once there was only one file to copy so it was easy
it looks a bit more complicated if you have done any overdubs
